If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face- FOREVER. 1984 by George Orwell plunges us into a bleak, horrifying society with a totalitarian government which is ruthless in its pursuit of power. It is a society with no place for individual. The novel depicts a future dystopian society to its last details and this is what makes it so terrifying. It will be a nightmare to be trapped in such a society because the totalitarian government controls not only the physical body of its subjects but also the psyche of the subjects. History is replete with examples of totalitarian regime but the one depicted in this novel outdoes everyone else in its atrocity, oppression, extracting abject self-submission from its subjects, and the ruthless pursuit of absolute power over matter and mind. Circe by Madeline Miller is a hyped book, and I am sorry to say it doesn’t live up to its hype. Though, I will hasten to add that it is an impactful book with a strong central character. The novel evolves following the trajectory of its protagonist Circe, quite literally. The novel documents the life of the mythical figure Circe through her own perspective. Born to the Sun God Helios and Oceanid nymph Perse, she began her life as a dim, dull star amidst the constellation of brightest stars. She has inherited neither the grandeur of her father nor the beauty of her mother. Rather, she fares even worse than the ordinary nymphs. She is mocked for her dullness which she accepts as a justified treatment. Though she is dull than most Gods, nymphs and her siblings but is she really worse than them? সুচিত্রা ভট্টাচার্যের লেখা 'কাছের মানুষ' চিরকাল আমার হৃদয়ের খুব কাছে থাকবে। প্রথম কারণ তো এই যে এইটাএকটা অসাধারণ উপন্যাস আর দ্বিতীয় কারণ, এইটা আমার পড়া প্রথম বাংলা উপন্যাস। এই কিছুক্ষণ আগেই বইটা পড়া শেষ করলাম। বইটা পরে যেই অনুভূতি হচ্ছে তা বড়োই জটিল, তাও সেই অনুভূতি ই তুলে ধরার চেষ্টা করবো। প্রথমেই বলি 'কাছের মানুষ' কেবল মাত্র উপন্যাস নয়, এইটা একটা লিভিং এন্টিটি। বইটা পড়তে পড়তে কখনও আমিও রায়বাড়ির এক সদস্য হয় উঠতাম, আবার কখনো কখনো মাধবপুরএর গ্রামঃ পরিবেশে নিজেকে পেতাম, তো কখনো আবার শুভাশিস দের শোভামণ্ডিত ফ্ল্যাটে নিস্পৃহ ছন্দার পাশে গিয়ে দাঁড়াতাম। বইটা পড়লেই এক জীবন্ত চলচ্চিত্র চোখের সামনে ভাসত। বইটা পড়ে নানা রকমের আবেগ মন ছুঁয়ে কোথাও বিলীন হয়ে যেত। আমি মনে করি এইটাই হল একটা ভালো উপন্যাসের কষ্টি, যেইটা পড়ে পাঠকের মনে নানা রকমের আবেগের সৃষ্টি হবে। সুচিত্রা ভট্টাচার্য বাঙালি মিডল ক্লাসের আসল ছবি তুলে ধরেছে। গল্পটা লেট 80s এর কিন্তু সময়ের স্রোতে গল্পের সমসমায়িকতা এখনো ক্ষয়ে যায় নি। এই আধুনিক যুগে আমরা সবাই খুব স্বার্থপর হয় গেছি। শুধু নিজের টুকু ছাড়া কিছুই বুঝি না আর বুঝ...

এক আশ্চর্য ঘটনা ঘটলো আজ। আশ্চর্য না বলে অলৌকিক বা ভৌতিক বললে ও চলে।  ইদানিং খুব গরম পড়েছে, প্রাণ অতৃষ্ট হয় উঠেছে। এ.সি ছাড়া এক মিনিটও তিষ্ঠানো যাচ্ছে না। রাতের খাওয়া দাওয়া সেরে এসেই বেডরুমের দরজাটা বন্ধ করে এ.সি চালালাম। আমি আর মা বসে আছি এইরকন্ডিশনেড বেডরুমে। দু জনেই ফোন চালাতে খুব ব্যস্ত, আজকাল যা হয় আর কি। আমার বাবার b-shift ডিউটি চলছে, মনে দুপুর ২টো থেকে রাত ১০টা পর্যন্ত ডিউটি। তখন প্রায় ১০টা বাজতে যায়, ফোনে এতটাই মগ্ন ছিলাম যে ঠিক বাজে কটা খেয়াল করা হয় নি, ব্যাস এত টা খেয়াল ছিল যে ১০টা বাজতে যায় আর বাবার আসার সময় হয় গেছে। বাবার গাড়ির আওয়াজ আমি ঘুমিয়ে ঘুমিয়েও চিনতে পারি, সেই কোন ছোটবেলার থেকে শুনে আসছি, ঘুমের ঘোরেও তো চেনাটাই স্বাভাবিক। তো ফোনের মায়াবী জগতে লীন থেকেও বাবার গাড়ির আওয়াজটা কানে এলো। আসারই তো কথা, ১০টা বাজে, সবকিছুই তো নিয়ম মাফিক চলছে, কোনো কিছুই তো নিয়মের ব্যাতিক্রম হচ্ছে না, তাই আমিও ডুবে আছি আমার মায়াবী জগতের মায়ায়। বাবা ডিউটি থেকে এসে নিজেই বাইরের গেট খুলে গাড়ি বারান্দায় রেখে ভিতরে আসে। তা আসতে ৫-৭ মিনিট মতন লেগে যায়। আবার কোনো নিয়মের ব্যাতিক্রম না করে, আম...
